The Top was the original picture, untouched and unfooled around with.
The bottom was both touched and fooled with in the GIMP.
I drew the background in the GIMP, (which was amazingly fun) using normal brushes. All the lines you don't see on the top picture were done by me.
I colored and shaded this picture, but the original line work was done by 3Fangs.

Not too shabby color job, and the background you did came out decent for your first time doing a completely computerized background.
The shading on her jacket is especially impressive, although I think her hair could use a little extra oomph.
Overall though, I'm rather impressed by what you've managed here. Especially considering you are you! Who knows? You're learning quite quickly; maybe you'll manage to be a halfway decent colorist before you know it!
